Do you want to improve your play calling, mechanics, court coverage or any other fundamental part of your basketball officiating?
One of the most effective ways to improve your officiating is to critically watch your game film.
Objectively watching your video and taking notes will help you identify areas of your game that you can improve and areas where you are already strong. Using the forms in this deep dive journal will help you organize your notes and see patterns in your fundamentals and play calling. Each deep dive page has an example key of abbreviations for labeling your plays.
Simply finding areas of improvement without a plan will not help you get better. After the deep dive form on each page is a space for you to reflect and start a plan for improvement.
Review your deep dives before your next game. This will give you a specific area for improvement. Focus on this specific area until it stops being an issue for you. As anyone who has been to a camp knows, it is difficult to fix everything at once.
Use one page per game, half, or quarter. How deep you dive into your video review will determine how many pages you will need to use.
An example deep dive, a Q & A and tips and tricks can be found on the last pages of this journal.
I developed this Deep Dive Journal because we are often told to watch our video but not given the tools to do that effectively. You should modify this journal in any way that works best for you. I would definitely appreciate any ideas you may have to make this a more effective tool.
Thank you for taking the time to improve your officiating. Your improvement makes the game better for everyone.
