
Reimagining the O'Bryant School

With initial phases completed in 1977, the Madison Park Campus High School was designed by Marcel Breuer’s firm to be a citywide magnet school. It now serves a pair of institutions, the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science and the Madison Park Technical Vocational High School. The complex’s imaginative facade is composed of deep precast concrete panels with alternating pyramid-like impressions. Yet for all this playfulness on the exterior, the interiors lack light, identity, and the experiential qualities needed to foster twenty-first-century learning and student dignity.
Faculty and eighty-seven students at Wentworth Institute of Technology participated in a two-year-long initiative working with leadership from the Mayor’s Office and Boston Public Schools to reimagine this landmark. Across studios and seminars, they engaged more than sixty high school students, community stakeholders, school administrators, and teachers in preparing a series of proposals to help guide future conversations about O’Bryant and its campus setting.
Projects are rooted in issues of sustainability, social equity, student empowerment, and neighborhood vitality—drawing on the expertise of architects, historians, preservationists, urban designers, engineers, and other collaborators. The proposals and a related set of recommendations examine ways in which the school and campus could be enriched through design, while identifying opportunities for preservation, transformation, and expansion.
