CHAPTER 1 - Introduction: The Theory of Ayurveda
"The body, and that which is called the mind, are both considered to be abodes of disease, likewise of well-being. The cause of well-being is the harmonious or concordant interaction of body and mind” - ‘Charaka Samhita’, one of the oldest Ayurveda texts.
Ayurveda describes individuals on the basis of
Manasa (Mind or psychology, controlled by Gunas (Attributes)) and
Prakriti (constitution, controlled by Doshas (energies that circulate in the body and also govern physiological activity).
The theory of Ayurveda understands that
• the mind is governed by three attributes (the Triguna System) and
• the body is governed by three Doshas (the Tri-Dosha System).
In Ayurveda, Triguna and Tridosha form the basis of all diagnosis and treatment procedures.
Balancing these is the best way to maintain health and cure diseases.
