Through the events of Lylah Pardy’s life can be glimpsed the problems, difficulties, insecurities and dangers for ordinary people living in Dorset in the mid nineteenth century. Her survival she owed to a landlord and her employer, though neither could be described as benevolent. Her education and protection were provided by a very good friend. Love and happiness she received from her soldier, Daniel.
But ultimately she owed most to her own stoicism, capabilities - and a small dose of kleptomania.
