“Cloud Crowd” is a picture book that illustrates the difference between very similar sounding English words that contain the letters L and R. Suitable for people of all ages who like word play and a chuckle. Recommended for anyone working on their English pronunciation, in particular Japanese learners of English as a foreign language.
It features 15 word pairs known as “minimal pairs,” meaning they only differ by a single sound. They are often used for language learning and in speech therapy. For native English speakers, “Cloud Crowd” is a fun read with word play and artwork. For any looking for pronunciation practice, this book is an enjoyable way to work on similar sounding consonants for better communication.
This book was written by Japanese-English translator and interpreter Melanie Taylor after years of living in Japan, including 7 years teaching English. Seeing firsthand how difficult it was for many Japanese speakers to hear and pronounce L and R, which they don’t have in Japanese, she often drew sketches to show the difference. Her rough drawings helped her students see how the spelling and pronunciation can greatly alter the meaning—rice and lice is a prime example. This book is a collection of the funny L/R miscommunications Melanie encountered through her time in Japan, brought to life in full colour with beautiful illustrations by Megan Tsen.
