Before joining Sport England, I worked as a Community Worker in the inner city so was fairly adept at recognising signs and strengths. The first time I visited Long Lane to meet Mick there was an arrival of vans and cars to be there with him. These were people bunking off work because of their belief in Long Lane and what Mick was delivering. I was never happier than helping Long Lane a lottery grant-richly deserved and richly repaid.
