Science or Society? was published in association with the Channel 4 TV series, Crucible - Science in society, to illustrate the range of positions developed by the ‘the radical science movement’ in Britain. The extracts in this present collection appear at the tail end of the book, where chapters are most explicit about the conceptual framework that underlies the discussion. In due course we hope to republish the whole book in this digital format. The now established notion of a field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) had not yet emerged, and Science or Society? was produced under the twin rubrics of ‘labour process theory’ and ‘cultural materialism’. Thirty-five years later these remain viable as theory-of-practice for science-and-society activists.
