"... others expressed disappointment that the institution, The Apartheid Museum, was the brainchild of a White man" (Los Angeles Times - Gold Reef City Casino - December 2001)
We would want to interrogate that disappointment. Why does it matter? Is it possible that the disappointment is rooted in the collective memory of Black people who have been dehumanised, appropriated, brutalized and made inferior for so long that we need to affirm ourselves and our achievements? Is this a sign that still we bleed from the vicious assault of colonialism and apartheid? Perhaps there lingers within us a particular sensitivity about what we, as Black people, ought to do for the telling of our story - from our perspective. Perhaps these emotions hark back to the legacy of our historical experiences - lesser, hopeless, helpless and entirely dependent on the White man.
We would want to interrogate that.
