This is a reformatted version of an 1890 book by John Nicholson of Hull. He was a dedicated researcher of the folk traditions of the East Riding of Yorkshire. He was not only very knowledgeable of the local folk beliefs, but also the local dialect. Much of this has now been lost, but he gives many interesting examples of it. He also gives interesting profiles of some local characters, some still celebrated, others now forgotten.
Nicholson was a prominent member of the Hull Literary Club and also wrote works about the Beacons, Folk Moots and Folk Speech of East Yorkshire.
