The poems of Omar Khayyam have been translated into over 70 different languages. The first Assyrian translation was made by Mirza Mesrop Khan Karam (1862-1943) and published in Tabriz in 1933. Karam was born in the village of Saatlui in Urmia and was educated in the American Mission schools. He studied theology and served as a preacher and later as a customs officer and a secretary to the crown prince of Iran in Tabriz. He mastered several languages and wrote many articles and poems for Assyrian periodicals such as Rays of Light and the Star. His edition of Omar Khayyam’s poems contains the original Persian text and Assyrian translation of 396 quatrains as well as 53 quatrains by another famous Persian poet, Baba Tahir of Hamadan.
