This volume of twenty short biographies of Assyrian men and women was written by various early missionaries of the American Protestant Mission to the Assyrians (1835-1934). It was published in 1857 and was intended for a western audience to illustrate the value of the mission in bringing the “benighted and fallen” Christians of the East to a true understanding of the Christian faith and to encourage their continued support for the mission. Although it tends to read like a dry and humorless Protestant Lives of Saints, it does provide the modern reader with details of the daily lives and struggles of Assyrians at a time for which we have very few other resources.
