Amid the streets of a little island, a young man called Sylvester Spence Palvine plays piano from a high window. He did all he could to get my attention, but it would be years before I would finally ascend those stairs to hear his story. And I would do it believing he was a murderer. They told me he was young when he went up there, he told me he had no belief that he would ever be allowed back down. So, he went somewhere where he thought he could be free. I followed him, hoping to know him – to truly know him. I do not know if I know him, not yet. But it was he who showed me that all I knew of the world was so, so tenuous. I am still not sure if he is quite free, but I know he will fight for his freedom until the end.
