Abe Lincoln's Misfits

1936. The fledgling legally elected Spanish Republic, the most innovative and kind Democratic S Socialist experiment in Europe, is threatened by Franco, Mussolini, Hitler and the Catholic Church. The Western Democracies have all declared neutrality. Thousands of idealistic Americans volunteer to fight for the Republic, risking jail, loss of citizenship and their lives. They include: John Smith, 40 year-old mild mannered insurance salesmen from the Commie hating KKK-supporting Midwestern Bible belt, who finally leaves friends and family behind to do the Right rather than politically safe and socially acceptable thing. Tim Jackson, Black WWI veteran who upon return to America found that ‘freedom for all’ still does not include those with dark skin, and especially for those who aspire to the Socialist ideal that everyone should give according to their abilities and take according to their needs. Vincent DeAngelo, too charismatic for his own good 19 year old Brooklyn Wiseguy whose mob Sicilian relatives in Fascist Italy have been persecuted, jailed and killed by Mussolini. Who also has a grudge against the Catholic Church due to his having been ‘loved’ by priests and nuns in very inappropriate ways as a kid. ----Sally, self-taught ace at everything, including being a doctor, a mechanic, a wielder of weapons, linguist and political writer, whose sadistic ‘All American’ law enforcing husband continues to do whatever he can to keep ‘the little woman’ at home and in her proper place wherever she runs to. Aside from ‘normal’ hardships in a brutal war, they find themselves having conflicts with political ideologies, bosses from other places who do not have their interest at heart and each other . All while being cast as involuntary key players in a complex Civil War which becomes a dress rehearsal for WWII
