Language Skills for ESL Novices: Practical Drills

This course aims to further develop awareness and use of the conventions of English among high-beginners or pre-intermediate students of English. It will help learners practice and command English at this level, and enhance their careers. More specifically the course will further develop listening and speaking ability on a variety of interesting topics as well as developing reading and writing skills through doing reading comprehension exercises with the trainer who will also help students read fluently in the right pronunciation, and coin correct word derivatives, sentences and paragraphs on different real-world subjects. This practice book contains task-based listening activities, easygoing and personalized speaking drills, learner-centered speaking passages, as well as remedial construction preliminaries. In doing so, the compiler aims to help advance the ability to perform in all four skills based on the student’s own level and progress. Various related rudimentary abilities ( in grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, conversation, English-Arabic translation, understanding, dictation & handwriting) will also be improved in the course of taking this course. The book is divided into four sections followed by a section on the listening script, and complemented with a CD for the listening material. The drills or exercises in each section are arranged gradually from plainer to a bit harder. There is no answer key part, so the student will depend either on the trainer’s help or his self-study research abilities. Finally, the material and the exercises used in this course have been collected from different online and electronic sources, so that the ESL learner will find it easier to practice English skills in one print book or ebook rather than surf numerous webpages or internet sites.
