Is it Feminism? The Use of the Female Figure by Artist Roger Person

ByMorgan Wright

Rodger Person is a North Carolina artist who started his art career after a disabling accident, which confined him to a wheelchair. Before his accident, he was an engineer and did not have any formal training as an artist. The basis for his art is broad, as he uses found objects from various periods and different materials to create stained glass pieces, sculptures, paintings, ceramics, and mixed media assemblages. Although Person’s works cover a broad spectrum and inspiration is gathered from various areas, one constant is the use of the female form. The predominance of the female figure is based on his belief in the value and importance of women to society. In this paper I will discuss Rodger Person’s use of the female figure in a number of his works and compare his art to feminism, as well as, to other artists such as Alice Neel, Cindy Sherman, and René Magritte.
