The Tale of Genji This is the story of Hikaru Genji, as told by Lady Murasaki Shikibu. Hikaru Genji, also known as the "Shining Prince," is the illegitimate son of an emperor and a beloved concubine. Due to political reasons, Genji is demoted to commoner status and embarks on a series of romantic and political adventures. Despite his demotion, Genji, who is exceptionally handsome, talented, and charming, becomes a favorite at court and a magnet for many women. Genji's early life is filled by passionate affairs, including a forbidden relationship with his stepmother, Fujitsubo, which results in the birth of an illegitimate son. His love life is complex and tumultuous, involving numerous women, such as the beautiful but tragic Yugao, the devoted Murasaki, and the jealous Rokujo Lady.
