Literary Plays: Adaptations of Brontë, James, and Turgenev

<i>Literary Plays</i> presents contemporary, dramatic adaptations of three 19th-century literary giants: Charlotte Brontë, Henry James, and Ivan Turgenev. <i>By the Author of <u>Jane Eyre</u></i> focuses on the tempestuous two years Brontë spent in Brussels and the literary masterpiece, <i>Villette</i>, that records the great love and great emotional crisis of that experience. <i>Another Turn of the Screw</i> reworks James’s best known story, throwing new light on the long suppressed pedophilic impulse at its core, and thus can be read in conjunction with new interest in James charted in Colm Tóibín’s novel, <I>The Master</I>. <I>First Love</I> is an unabashed tribute to the Turgenev perfect story on the strength and weakness of the human heart. The retelling is simple and straightforward, drawing lovingly upon Tchaikovsky’s <I>Children’s Album</I>.
