To Punish and to Protect: A History of the Ballarat Gaol

This undergraduate essay was submitted for the capstone subject, HIST30060 Making History, to the University of Melbourne. The primary objective of the project was to research and write a local history for a public audience. I selected Ballarat Gaol as the topic due to my interest in historical criminology and penology, and the significance of this Gaol for the establishment of Victoria’s prison system.
