When it comes to women’s issues in the male-dominated region of the Middle East, the focus is often on the movements of women that encourage social change and government reform. The empowerment of women is often talked about in terms of their numbers in certain industries, their political participation, their admittance into universities, or their overcoming of economic obstacles. An overlooked career and way of life that many Middle Eastern women choose for themselves is service in the military. It is worthwhile to discuss the empowerment of women that choose this path.
