Pilgrimage for God, written by Ivan Shmelev, is an autobiographical account of a foot pilgrimage to Holy Trinity-Sergius Monastery from Moscow when Ivan was six years old. This trip rightly belongs to the same timeframe as the first half of his other book, The Year of the Lord, but was so detailed that it was published under separate cover. He describes the people, Moscow, nature, life in the monastery, trials and miracles. It is also a historical gem, including so many details about Russian life in the middle of the second half of the nineteenth century.
