Watching Lumia

ByNick Admussen

Watching Lumia is an ekphrastic cycle that expands into ars poetica, where Thomas Wilfred's Lumia and its light music (not lite music, mind you) are a metaphor for writer and poem. As the poems unfold, the eye of Admussen’s I is always between us and the picture, illuminating, probing, interpreting, and obscuring, his images almost edible and ever shifting into new but recognizable patterns. It would be cliche to call this writing "kaleidoscopic." Think instead of the synesthetic impatience of wanting to eat a Rothko or chase a shadow you’ll never catch, especially if it’s yours. Geothe called color the “sufferings of light” and Dickinson said art is a house that “tries to be haunted.” Watching Lumia finds its ghosts in the concentrated gaze of the gallery, and “Like a person it/ performs joys." -Kate Lebo, author of A Commonplace Book of Pie
