Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a children's novel by British author Roald Dahl, published in 1964. It tells the story of Charlie Bucket, a young boy from a poor family who wins a tour of the chocolate factory of eccentric confectioner Willy Wonka. Along with four other children, Charlie gets to see the amazing and fantastical world of Wonka's factory, where he experiences the incredible edible delights that Wonka has created. The plot Charlie Bucket is a poor boy who lives with his parents and four grandparents in a small house on the outskirts of town. His family is so poor that they can only afford to buy one Wonka bar a year, and Charlie saves up his money to buy one on his birthday. One day, Wonka announces that he has hidden five golden tickets inside his chocolate bars. The children who find the tickets will be given a tour of his factory, and one of them will be awarded a lifetime supply of chocolate. Charlie is overjoyed when he finds a golden ticket in his Wonka bar. He is joined on the tour by four other children: Augustus Gloop, a greedy boy who eats too much; Veruca Salt, a spoiled girl who demands everything she wants; Violet Beauregarde, a gum-chewing girl who turns into a blueberry; and Mike Teavee, a television-obsessed boy who shrinks into a television. Wonka takes the children on a magical tour of his factory, which is filled with incredible machines and inventions. The children get to see Wonka's chocolate river, his everlasting gobstopper machine, and his lickable wallpaper. However, not all of the children behave themselves on the tour. Augustus Gloop falls into the chocolate river and is sucked up into a pipe. Veruca Salt is turned into a squirrel by a nut-sorting machine. Violet Beauregarde is turned into a blueberry by a blueberry-blowing gum machine. And Mike Teavee is shrunk into a television by a television-making machine. In the end, only Charlie remains. Wonka is impressed by Charlie's kindness and good nature, and he decides to make Charlie his heir. Charlie and his family move into the factory, and they live happily ever after.
