Viktor Ullmann, a German-Czech composer of Jewish descent, died in a gas chamber at Auschwitz after being jailed for two years in the Nazi concentration camp at Terezín. Before living in Terezín, Ullmann developed his musical style under influences from the Second Viennese School and Anthroposophy. While at Terezín, he composed prolifically. This research project will concentrate on one of Ullmann’s vocal works from that period, Der Mensch und sein Tag, op. 47. Through understanding of his background, the musical influences on him, and analysis of the piece, the project will attempt a deeper understanding of Ullmann’s musical style. Chapter Five will discuss the potential musical interpretation.
