Seed Yams of our Land
Poems on Nigeria's National Youth Service Corps Scheme (with ceramic sculptures by the author)
Seed Yams of Our Land was written during Onuzulike’s year-long national youth service (NYSC) in Ondo State, Nigeria, beginning from the orientation camp at Ikare-Akoko to his place of primary assignment at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). He was the first-place recipient of the Ondo State Merit Award for the National Youth Service program in 1998.
Poems in this collection ruminate over the collective experiences of young men and women who take part in the mandatory service year. They are reinforced with images of works drawn from his studio project based on terracotta yams formed and presented in ways that playfully but powerfully critique the precarious, yet hopeful, conditions in which Nigeria’s young people (her metaphorical seed yams) are perennially grown.
