A History of Caribbean Secondary School Astronomy Education

ByP. A. Stahl

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This expanded 4th edition includes a Photo Section with vintage (20th century) images showing the development of the Harry Bayley Observatory, as well as a revised essay On Short Sight & Astronomy Education. Also the full text of my paper: Astronomy As A Vehicle For Motivation In Science Education, presented to the conference Science Education for Progress- A Caribbean Perspective in April, 1979. Most of the remaining material for Chapters 1-4 and 6, 7 is based on notes, articles, photos and related material that I’d saved since the 1970s, as well as written news items, paper and projects published in The Journal of the Barbados Astronomical Society while I was Editor. This book documents the planning and implementation of the first ever secondary school astronomy curriculum for the Caribbean. This was as part of the CXC Integrated Science course, initiated in 1977 in the West Indies. Mr. Stahl uses his broad experience in the actual events to show the curious reader how astronomy was taught for at least 6 years in a third world region.
