Towards the Bowels of the Earth: Butoh Writhing In Perspectives

Butoh dances the ticklish matters that many would rather not think about. This book explores the origins of butoh dance in Japan, how the dance seeks to disrupt bodily habits, and the ups and downs of butoh as a way of life. Approaching the dance from a number of different historical and theoretical perspectives, our eyes slowly begin to adjust to this dance of darkness. Revised and expanded edition. The original work was the winner of the Pomona College Asian Studies Thesis Prize for 2003.
