The Cokwe of Northeastern Angola were accustomed to illustrate their stories with standardized illustrations drawn on the sand, called ‘sona.’ The first volume of “Sona Geometry from Angola”, entitled “Mathematics of an African Tradition” analyzes and reconstructs the knowledge and expert mathematics inherent in the tradition of the ‘sona.’ The present second volume, entitled “Educational and Mathematical Explorations of African Designs on the Sand,” suggests various opportunities to incorporate and exploit the ‘sona’ in the context of mathematics education, in particular, in secondary, undergraduate and teacher education.
“This beautifully illustrated book represents an important educational resource. I’m certain that every mathematics educator, especially at secondary and university levels, would benefit from having access to it” (Mohamed El Tom in the Foreword).
