His father was an Irish emigrant and active in the IRA in the struggle for Irish independence. In 1932 his parents moved to Dublin, where he now returned – following his many travels. He studied Irish at the Christian Brothers College in Synge Street and Spanish at University College Dublin. He has worked as a journalist and private teacher and has travelled throughout the whole of Europe. He has lived for extended periods in Leeds, Geneva, Bristol en Barcelona. From 1971 till 1973 he was Gregory Fellow of poetry at Leeds University. From 1977 to 1978 he received acclaim from thinkers for his socially critical contributions the weekly radio programme Oro Domhnaigh. Pearse Hutchinson is also one of the co-founders of the literary magazine, Cyphers.
