The Story Is Us!

THE STORY IS US! by the children of the DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CHARTER SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, NEW ORLEANS, LA. A lively portrait of childhood in the 9th Ward of New Orleans today, The Story is Us! weaves together drawings and writing from first graders, a photographic essay on dance from third graders, a mystery by fourth graders, and a story about self-discovery by the honors students from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The youthful narratives, full of joy and imagination, capture the special feelings of youngsters growing up post Katrina and in the age of the first African-American President, who visited the school and appears in a few parts of the text. The Story Is US! was created in collaboration with authors Robie H. Harris, Susan Kuklin, Elizabeth Levy and Fatima Shaik from the PEN Children’s/Young Adult Books Authors Committee, New York, NY.
