The Urban Variation conference, held in Gothenburg in 2013 was a productive and interesting event. Much of the debate on the urban starts with the idea that the concept corresponds to a phenomenon which is easy and simple to define; actually, it is often taken for granted that we “know” what it means. However, only a brief look at the varied debates on large and densely inhabited settlement sites demonstrates that this is not the case. In general, the attempts at definition are based on particular historical and geographical cases, and difficult to apply outside these cases. Further, a renewed look at the period chosen and the geographical space in question often in itself question the established definition.
