During the Cold War years one of NATO's primary functions was to ensure the North Atlantic and vessels in northern European waters could proceed unimpeded through the Greenland-Iceland-UK Gap.Problems with member countries in the southern region presented a certain weakness to the Alliance and this situation remains today in the new millennium.
