When I was three years old, my mother had to consider my funeral arrangements.
I had been diagnosed with three brain tumors and two strokes. The tumors were removed, but escaping death did not leave me without some scrapes: I've yet to fully reacquire the fine motor skills in my left hand and I walk with inelegant gait in my step. While others may view my condition as unique or pitiable, these are things I have simply grown up with.
"Typing With One Hand" is Dave Eggers meets Frank McCourt in a memoir about about life after brain tumors. I'd tried my damnedest to have a normal childhood -- despite regular hospital check-ups -- but when coupled with family dysfunction, religious bigotry, sexual ineptitude and college, a "Shaky Left Hand" can be the least of your worries.
So if you've ever felt insecure, out of place or even a little down about the cards you've been dealt, try "Typing With One Hand." You'll find it's easier to fit in once you realize that no one really does.
