This picture is from a recent production of "Oh What a Lovely War" staged by my amateur dramatics society. My usual attire is perfectly normal. I was born in Czechoslovakia and lived in Germany, Switzerland and Canada before settling in England in 1970. As a manager and business consultant for 40 years I have travelled the world. I must have been in thousands of taxis. We all use them from time to time, in my case all the time. But especially in foreign countries, language can be a barrier to communication with drivers who are seldom bilingual. Fortunately I speak several languages and I indulged my natural curiosity by learning about my drivers' lives and experiences. Among the everyday humdrum stories, the most memorable are recorded in my booklet. Conversation with my drivers was often interesting, at times fascinating. And the drivers found it refreshing that someone would take an interest in them rather than only in getting to their destination.
