The Journal of General De Trobriand takes the reader to the Upper Missouri area in the troubled years of the late 1860's. De Trobriand was of military stock, but did not turn to the family's profession until comparatively late in life. He was born in 1816 and after attending university studied law and for several years held a governmental appointment in Paris. In 1841 he made an impulsive visit to the New World, toured both the United States and Canada, wrote a book, and fell in love, all in a single year.
Thereafter for many years he alternated between Europe and America, devoting himself to literary and artistic pursuits and enjoying the wealth and social station to which he had been born. Eventually he fixed upon New York as his permanent home, where during the late 1850's he became a familiar figure in the leading literary and social circles of the time.
