Employing nearly on half of the world’s workforce, agriculture is clearly of great economic and social importance. An incredible variety of methods is used globally; the Western world has the latest scientific and industrial advancements at its disposal, yet in some parts of the Third World a living is made using tools that have hardly changed in two thousand years. Thus the study of agriculture geography is clearly important. The subject may be simply defined. Agricultural geography seeks to describe and explain spatial variations in agricultural activity over the earth’s surface. The heart of this task is to explain the great diversity of agriculture. It has been estimated that there are over 250 million farmers in the world.
