
Greek cuisine, known as the food of the gods, is the traditional cuisine of Greece, a Mediterranean delight sharing characteristics with Italy, the Balkans, Turkey and the Levant. Contemporary Greek cookery makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including poultry, rabbit and pork, olives, cheese, zucchini, and yogurt.The desserts are dominated by nuts and honey. Many dishes use a phyllo pastry.
A key ingredient of any meal is virgin olive oil - the fruits of the olive groves that dominate the Greek landscape. As lambs and goats in Greece are free-grazing and pastures are very rich in herbs, meats have a distinctive flavour not to be found anywhere else in the world.
