This book chronicles events detailing the establishment of the first seminary and Institute of Religion classes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alaska. The first seminary class in Alaska was held in Anchorage in January 1962. Four years later (1966), students at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks attended the first institute class. The book documents subsequent events from its beginning in 1962 throughout the next 50 years.
The men and women who moved their families to Alaska to help establish and coordinate these programs were youthful, idealistic, dedicated, and adventurous. They had a “sense of mission” and a willingness to devote their time, energy, and talents in behalf of the youth and young adults. Their success depended on visionary priesthood leaders and supportive parents. Without the support of local members who volunteered their time as teachers and assisted with transportation, the program would not have succeeded.
The youth who were members of the Church who were living in Alaska were a small minority and they had to be firm in their faith to participate in these programs. Attending seminary and institute classes in the harsh, dark, winter months, requires a firm commitment from students and teachers, as well as from parents and priesthood leaders. This is their story, mostly told in their own words, but narrated at times by the editor-in-chief, Douglas F. Baird.
