Leaning on the North: Stories of Kindness from the North Country

This is a book telling the stories of the many people who made a decision to live where life is often hard, yet beautiful, where most only vacation - the northern portion of three states: Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The northern states near the Great Lakes shape the lives of the people around them; harsh winds, black waves, and terrifying blizzards force inhabitants to watch out for one another. Northerners are bred to understand their obligation to each other in order to survive, but their altruism comes from something deeper – perhaps a connection to the land, perhaps gratefulness for being allowed to live in splendor. The people of the north lend an equal amount of beauty to this remote land; their daily kindness rivals the majesty of the lakes on a clear, bright day. These are the stories of a phenomenon of culture. It is indeed different “up north.”
