Dakota Anna takes place during the years 1917 and 1918. The setting of the story is rural eastern North Dakota, the closest city being Fargo. Fifteen-year-old Anna Schmitt and her family live in a much simpler time, yet everyone is required to do their share of work. Opportunities are scarce for Anna and her siblings to leave their farm. Daydreaming Anna is impatient to grow up and experience the world beyond her sheltered life on the farm. When the occasion arises allowing Anna to live in town with her aunt and uncle and attend the local high school, she is thrilled with all the opportunities that come her way: a chance to broaden her mind, her circle of friends, and to experience first love. This is a down-to-earth account of what life was like for a teenager living in rural North Dakota nearly a century ago. Though the story is fictional, the historical facts accurately reflect daily life for that time period.
