SUSIE Q. SMITH is brash, funny, smart, perky and cute as a button. The comic was about a teenage
girl and covered many of the familiar themes of young adult comics: dating, school, dealing with
parents and siblings. What set it apart, at least slightly, was the comic was unusually frank about
Susie's romantic life. Susie and her pals are often depicted in the midst of communal make-out
sessions, something you'd rarely if ever see in the typically modest teenage features, although the
Walters toned it down for SUSIE Q. SMITH’s Dell FOUR COLOR series.
SUSIE Q. SMITH was originally a single panel comic strip published by King Features in 1945.The
strip was created by Linda and Jerry Walter, a husband and wife team. Jerry did the writing and
Linda handled the artwork. The series became a moderate success. In 1953 the Walters moved
SUSIE Q. SMITH from King Features to the McNaught Syndicate. The move to a different company
also included a change in the comic’s format from a daily single panel to a multi-panel strip. SUSIE
Q. SMITH ultimately lasted into 1959.
