Movie Comics was published by All-American Comics in 1939. The series presented the films of the day and lasted a total of six issues. Movie Comics used colorized stills of the films for the individual panels. Some of the movies that were adapted are Gunga Din, Son of Frankenstein, Stagecoach, The Man in the Iron Mask, The Oregon Trail and The Phantom Creeps. In spite of the front cover blurb proclaiming “64 PAGES IN NATURAL COLOR”, the images in Movie Comics were very early attempts at colorizing black and white pictures for comic books, so “natural” is a relative term. The source material available for this book came from fiche rather than scans and therefore the images are not as crisp as one would hope. Movie Comics serves as a fascinating historical artifact for comic book and film lovers alike.
