A GORGEOUS 1940s PHOTO-TOUR THROUGH A BEAUTIFUL WORLD THE MICHIGAN COPPER COUNTRY AND THE LAKE SUPERIOR REGION “Where Beautiful Scenery Reigns Supreme” In the northern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan lies the section commonly known as “The Copper Country.” The country gets its name form the large amount of a COPPER found there since 1845, when it was first discovered. Early mining was mostly confined to sections of Ontonagon and Keweenaw Counties, but in later years was carried on in Hancock, Painesdale, South Range and Mohawk. Mammoth mills and smelters have been operated on Torch and Portage Lakes and Lake Linden, Hubbel and Houghton. The Michigan College of Mining and Technology is located at Houghton in the heart of this mining district. It offers courses leading to all standard Engineering degrees. This institution is well known in all sections of the world where mining operations are carried out, and is noted for the thoroughness of its training. Isle Royale, now being developed as a National Park, is a rocky wilderness group of islands in Lake Superior, some 50 miles northwest of Keweenaw Point. The islands extend about 50 miles in length. This is a very rough, wild region furnishing wonderful natural scenery. Its lakes, harbors, bays and rugged bluffs offer natural beauty that is surpassed in very few places in the world. During the summer, boat service is offered from Houghton, Hancock, Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. As this park is developed, it will become one of the leading summer attractions of the Central States. The Copper Country, beautiful Keweenaw, and the Lake Superior region including Baraga and Ontonagon Counties are the summer playgrounds of thousands seeking out-of-door pleasures amid beautiful, natural surroundings in cool, bracing climate. Within a couple hours ride of Calumet, Houghton or Hancock, in almost any direction, are the depths of primeval forests with scarcely and evidence of the destructive hand of man. Purling brooks, mirror-like inland lakes, crowning crags and precipices, grand cliffs, rockbound and protected harbors and bays, rushing streams and beautiful waterfalls, greet the eye of the lover of nature. Trout and bass fishing in the streams and inland lakes appeal to disciples of Isaak Walton. While one is carefully playing the wary trout, a timid deer or a curious bear may be seen peeping through the brush to see what kind of an animal is sharing with them the cover of the deep woods.
