Richard Henry Dana, sent down from Harvard because of ill health, took the kill or cure option. He spent the next two years on an open sailing ship, costal trading in American and the Pacific. Delicate and educated Dana fought with weather conditions men and the wild oceans. He recorded his time on under sail before it would be lost to the more certain power of steam. The result is this book which is a classic in adventures, and an original history of the period.
