This inventive and lovely story charts the extraordinary journey of a carbon atom, affectionately named Adam, from the universe's birth to the present day. It offers a sweeping, accessible introduction to cosmology, chemistry, and natural history, three not so easy to teach topics. Structured as a first-person memoir, the story begins with the Big Bang, where Adam, though not yet formed, describes the singularity and the explosive origins of space and matter. Adam tells us about the formation of stars, fusion processes, the birth of elements, and his own dramatic creation within a dying star, eventually becoming part of Earth, a fearsome dinosaur, crude oil, and, amusingly, a cheeseburger. It mixes scientific terminology with playful metaphors and cultural references likely to appeal to both children and their adult readers (teachers and parents alike). While the story’s primary audience is young readers, it has a broad intergenerational charm and will delight readers with a curiosity for science and storytelling, as it delighted me. The author’s witty, personable voice addresses young readers directly. What I love is that it also anticipates their questions with humorous asides. A book to treasure and read for fun, entertainment, and knowledge.
