As the title “Wake Up the Dead Girl” hints, not all should be taken at face value at Lord Blumenthal's mansion. He employs an abundance of maids to help with all kinds of chores. His tone with them tends to be firm but cordial, and the girls seem to be getting along. And yet, their unquestioning, deep servitude paired with their anonymity generate a cult-like atmosphere.
A select few maids get to entertain the Lord's wealthy guests, which is supposedly an honor. But the circumstances are surreal, these activities unnatural. Rosalie Montgomery's imaginative short story is calmly presented, and has some captivating descriptions.
