Forgotten Names Recalled Stories from the Singapore Cenotaph commemorates the outbreak of the First World War 100 years ago. The Singapore cenotaph facing the Padang was built in 1922 as a tribute to the men from the Straits Settlements of Singapore, Penang and Malacca who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914 to 1918. Of the 124 names on the bronze plaques, 112 have been recalled in this book of stories that offers a small window into the past. These are stories of ordinary men, not the politicians and generals of history books. Through newspaper articles, letters, military and civil records, Rosemary Lim has pieced together a collection of insights into the lives and times of our men of the cenotaph.
