This thesis is a study of the evolution of American policy towards the Chinese Communists during the Second World War. Specifically, the United States Army Observation Group, also known as the Dixie Mission, is studied from its origin through to January, 1945. Three men intimately connected with the mission, John Paton Davies, Jr., John S. Service, and Colonel David D. Barrett, are examined for their pro-Communist beliefs and the subsequent negative backlash such stances earned them. Through these studies, the rise and fall of American cooperation with the Chinese Communists is observed.
