Certain details refuse to fit together. Before long, Jolie becomes convinced that something has gone terribly wrong. The trail repeatedly leads back to the same mystery. The Egypt Files. Nobody seems willing to explain exactly what they are. Some people become nervous whenever they are mentioned. Others react with hostility. A few appear genuinely frightened. Their reactions convince Jolie that she is moving closer to the truth. Unfortunately, she is also moving closer to danger. Jolie is not a soldier, spy, or intelligence operative. The people she encounters often are. Outmatched and operating with incomplete information, she relies on instinct, determination, and a refusal to abandon Sonnie. Every answer creates new questions. Every breakthrough exposes another layer of deception. As the search expands, trust becomes increasingly dangerous. People who seem helpful conceal secrets. Others who appear threatening occasionally prove useful. Somebody seems to be controlling the flow of information, deciding which truths become visible and which remain hidden. Meanwhile, Sonnie remains at the centre of everything. As the mystery approaches its climax, Jolie begins to suspect that the greatest threat may not be the people hunting her.
