In Britain in the the 1950s-60s one of the finest adventures a boy could have was to go to sea. Roy Bainton sailed from his home port, Hull, on his 16th birthday in 1959, and came ashore in 1966 after what he refers to as 'the adventure of my life'. These poems and reminiscences celebrate a vanished world, when British sailors still ruled the seas.
