41 Years With The State

ByRoy Smith

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This is the story of a soldier, from his own diaries kept for over 40 years. A man who fought in some of the bloodiest battles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Having served his country in Egypt, The Sudan and India he retired after 21 years. A few months later WW1 was declared and he re-enlisted to take part in the 'war to end all wars'. He went 'over the top' at The Somme. A well respected member of his adopted home town, Spalding in Lincolnshire, he also served as a Postman after 1919 and retired, as he described, after '41 Years with the State'. A family man Albert Smith lived his life in the service of his country; on their formation during WW2 he immediately joined the Home Guard as Regimental Sergeant Major.
